What are the symbols of Barcelona?

There's nothing like a pretty souvenir of Barcelona to give to a loved one after a trip... But what are the symbols of Barcelona? I'll tell you here!

Hola, it's Paulette! I'm often asked what the symbols of Barcelona are, to find gift ideas that represent the city well. That's why I'm going to tell you all about it here! 👀

The panot, the city's best-known symbol

One of the Barcelona symbols you'll see almost everywhere is the "panot".

It's a flower-shaped design, often found on the streets of the Eixample district.

Its name "panot" simply means "slab" or "cobble" in Catalan, and its Spanish translation is "baldosa".

For the record, this design was inspired by the flagstones that pave the entrance to Casa Amatller, a magnificent modernist and neo-Gothic mansion. You can see the tiles for yourself, at number 41 Passeig de Gràcia in Barcelona.

But why has a simple paving stone become the symbol of Barcelona?

Simply because it's unique, and everywhere at the same time! Created in Barcelona, you can't miss it today if you pass through the Eixample district.

There's plenty of "panot" memorabilia, including original jewelry.

In our Chez Paulette boutique-workshop, we make our own jewelry in gold- or silver-plated stainless steel, and offer you several models with a "panot", such as pendant necklaces, bracelets and earrings.

A jewel symbolizing Barcelona, a truly original gift idea!

Barcelona's monuments

Of course, Catalonia's capital is also known for its emblematic monuments: Sagrada Familia, Park Güell...

A good souvenir idea would be an object bearing one of these Barcelona symbols, such as a bag or a poster.

You can find them in our Chez Paulette store, and there's something for everyone! We have tote bags, posters and postcards featuring the Sagrada Familia, La Pedrera (also known as Casa Mila), Park Güell, the Arc de Triomphe and many other symbols of the city.

The rose, symbol of the legend of Sant Jordi, patron saint of Catalonia

At first glance, the rose doesn't seem to be an important flower in Barcelona... unless you come on April 23.

On this day, the city celebrates Sant Jordi or St. George, the patron saint of Catalonia.

Legend has it that the knight Saint George struck down a dragon holding a princess captive, and from the beast's blood on the ground grew a rosebush of red roses.

In memory of this story, every April 23, every town in Catalonia celebrates the knight with a tradition that could be compared to Valentine's Day: the boys give a red rose to the girls, who in turn give a book to the boys.

Barcelona fills up with book stalls and red roses on every street corner every year, making the red rose a symbol of this festival and of love.
