What are the symbols of Barcelona?

There's nothing like a beautiful souvenir representing Barcelona to give to a loved one after a trip… But what are the symbols of Barcelona? I'll explain it here!

Hi, I'm Paulette! I often get asked about the symbols of Barcelona, so people can find gift ideas that truly represent the city. So, I'm going to tell you all about them here! 👀

The panot, the city's most famous symbol

One of the symbols of Barcelona that you will see almost everywhere is the “panot”.

It is a flower-shaped design that is very often found on the ground in the streets of the Eixample district.

Its name, “panot”, simply means 'tile' or 'cobblestone' in Catalan, and it is also known by its Spanish translation, “baldosa”.

For a bit of background, this design was inspired by the paving stones at the entrance of Casa Amatller, a magnificent Modernista and Neo-Gothic residence. In fact, you can see the paving stones for yourself at number 41 Passeig de Gràcia in Barcelona.

But why has a simple paving stone become the symbol of Barcelona?

Simply because it's unique and everywhere at once. Created in Barcelona, today you can't walk through the Eixample district without noticing it.

Thus, there are many souvenirs with the image of the "panot", including original jewelry.

In our shop-workshop Chez Paulette, we manufacture our own jewelry in gold or silver stainless steel, and we offer you several models decorated with a "panot", such as necklaces with pendants, bracelets or even earrings.

A jewel and symbol of Barcelona, a truly original gift idea!

The monuments of Barcelona

Obviously, the capital of Catalonia is recognized for its emblematic monuments: Sagrada Familia, Park Güell…

A good souvenir idea would therefore be an object that bears one of these symbols of Barcelona, such as a bag or a poster.

You can find them in our Chez Paulette shop, and there's something for everyone! We have tote bags, posters, and postcards featuring the Sagrada Familia, La Pedrera (also known as Casa Milà), Park Güell, the Arc de Triomf, and many other symbols of the city.

The rose, symbol of the legend of Saint George, patron saint of Catalonia

At first glance, the rose doesn't seem to be an important flower in Barcelona... unless you come on April 23rd.

On that day, the city celebrates Sant Jordi or Saint George, who is the patron saint of Catalonia.

Legend has it that Saint George, a knight, defeated a dragon that held a princess captive, and from the beast's blood that fell to the ground, a rosebush of red roses was born.

In memory of this story, every April 23, all the cities of Catalonia celebrate the knight with a tradition that could be compared to Valentine's Day: boys give a red rose to girls, who in turn give them a book.

Therefore, Barcelona is filled every year with book stalls and red roses on every corner, making the red rose a symbol of this holiday and of love.

Beautiful earrings with a rose design, or even decorated with real dried rosebuds, are a magnificent gift that represents the traditions and history of Barcelona.
