What are the symbols of Barcelona?
There's nothing like a nice souvenir representative of Barcelona to offer to a loved one after a trip... But what are the symbols of Barcelona? I'll explain it to you here!
Hello, it's Paulette! I'm often asked what are the symbols of Barcelona, to find gift ideas that represent the city well. That's why I'm going to tell you everything here! 👀
The panot, the city's most famous symbol
One of the symbols of Barcelona that you will see almost everywhere is the “panot”.
It is a flower-shaped design, which is very often found on the street floor of the Eixample district.
Its name “panot” simply means 'slab' or 'pavement' in Catalan, and it is also called by its Spanish translation “baldosa”.
For the record, this design is said to be inspired by the slabs that pave the entrance to Casa Amatller, a magnificent modernist and neo-Gothic style residence. You can actually see the slabs for yourself at number 41 Passeig de Gràcia in Barcelona.
But why has a simple sidewalk paving stone become the symbol of Barcelona?
Simply because it is unique, and everywhere at once! Created in Barcelona, you can't miss it today if you pass through the Eixample district.
We thus find many souvenirs bearing the image of the “panot”, and in particular original jewelry.
In our boutique-workshop Chez Paulette, we make our own gold or silver stainless steel jewelry, and offer several models decorated with a “panot”, such as pendant necklaces, bracelets or even earrings.
A jewel symbol of Barcelona, a truly original gift idea!
Monuments of Barcelona
Obviously, the capital of Catalonia is recognizable by its emblematic monuments: Sagrada Familia, Park Güell...
A good souvenir idea would therefore be an object displaying one of these symbols of Barcelona, such as a bag or a poster.
You can find them in our Chez Paulette shop, and there is something for everyone! We have tote bags, posters and postcards featuring the Sagrada Familia, La Pedrera (also called Casa Mila), Park Güell, the Arc de Triomphe and many other symbols of the city.
The rose, symbol of the legend of Sant Jordi, patron saint of Catalonia
At first glance, the rose might not seem like an important flower in Barcelona… unless you come on April 23.
On this day, the city celebrates Sant Jordi or Saint George, who is the patron saint of Catalonia.
Legend has it that the knight Saint George slew a dragon that was holding a princess captive, and from the blood of the beast falling to the ground a rosebush of red roses was born.
In memory of this story, every April 23, each town in Catalonia celebrates the knight with a tradition that could be compared to Valentine's Day: boys give a red rose to girls, who in turn give a book to the boys.
Barcelona is therefore filled with book stalls and red roses on every street corner, every year, making the red rose a symbol of this celebration and of love.
Pretty earrings with a rose design, or decorated with real dried rosebuds, therefore make a wonderful gift representing the traditions and history of Barcelona.
